Amazon has agreed to pay $2.5 billion to settle allegations by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that Amazon.com, Inc. used manipulative, coercive, or deceptive user-interface designs, known as "dark patterns," to trick millions of consumers into enrolling in automatically renewing Amazon Prime subscriptions without their express informed consent. It is alleged that Amazon intentionally complicated the cancellation process to prevent users from terminating their memberships. Eligible consumers can receive reimbursement of their Amazon Prime fees, up to $51.
