Wells Fargo Bank has agreed to pay $85 million to settle a lawsuit alleging that Wells Fargo and certain executives violated federal securities laws by making false and misleading statements regarding the company’s diversity hiring initiative, specifically the "Diverse Search Requirement," and causing shareholder losses as a result. Plaintiffs claimed that the company conducted "fake" or "sham" interviews for positions that had already been filled in order to present a false appearance of interviewing diverse candidates.
